It started with the tin mining and rubber industries boom in the then Malaya back in 1856 when there was also an influx of Chinese immigrants from Southern China. It was during this period too that Ghee Hiang, which saw its origins from Fujian, China, was established with the arrival of a Fujian pastry chef to Penang’s shores. The chef, invited by Ghee Hiang’s founder, introduced Ghee Hiang traditional pastries in Penang and by the 1900s, the Ghee Hiang Baby Brand Pure Sesame Oil was introduced.

Both these product lines were carefully crafted with age-old proven traditional methods and techniques from Fujian, China, thus producing an end result of superb quality and incomparable flavours. Even as Ghee Hiang becomes an integral part of Penang and a reminder of Malaysia’s colourful heritage and rich traditions, it continues to improve its products and techniques.

Ghee Hiang has a proud history in Malaysia, dating back to 1856 – making this one of the oldest food manufacturer in the Malaysia. It’s no coincidence that Ghee Hiang, had evolved and lived through turbulent war times and rode in waves of economic growth, just as Malaya did, as it was then called.

The successful and magnanimous growth of Ghee Hiang was attributed through sheer hard work, determination and dedication of our early founding forefathers. As visionary leaders, they had instilled onto the Company the drive, courage, passion and desire to serve and succeed. Today, Ghee Hiang is much more than just a trade name. It is a piece of brand heritage, culture and tradition that has today become a universal household name.

Successful completion of over 160 years of serving our loyal customers with our relevant products, adding momentum to its economic progress and touching, though often invisibly, the lives of people, is our pride and joy. Expansion and customer service programs have been executed to instill Ghee Hiang as the leading heritage brand in manufacturing of traditional oriental biscuits & pastries, beverage as well as sesame oil. Soon, Ghee Hiang shall return to its alma mater, Xiamen, Fujian Province, China and showcase its products and historical existence in Malaya/Malaysia, exhibiting along the multicultural influences of British Colonization, Malay, Peranakan, Dutch, Portuguese, Indian and other ethnic values enriched in diversity and tradition.

Lastly, with the tremendous support and respect from my partners and staff of Ghee Hiang, I wish to pay tribute to one of the respected helmsman of Ghee Hiang who parted these wise yet simple words… A thousand times ply the long arduous chartered routes of hundreds trading ships BUT never even once try to ply the shortest chartered route you thought of”… to my late father and visionary.

These are common phrases that I have heard from many friends and customers when they visit Ghee Hiang stores. These may sound short and simple but these mean a lot to us at Ghee Hiang. After over 160 years, Ghee Hiang is not just a popular brand but a living heritage and a custodian of the art of manufacturing authentic, perfect sesame oil, oriental pastries and coffee.

Recently, Ghee Hiang opened up its pastry making factory to enable visitors to understand the painstaking processes that go into our handmade “Tau Sar Pneah” and other pastries. We also see it as our responsibility to educate school children to value the importance and contribution of tradition and heritage in today’s hi-tech world. Soon there will be a Ghee Hiang Museum to compliment our efforts in corporate social responsibility.

Besides putting an emphasis on tradition, consistently producing high quality products is another important milestone of our business. Our research and development team constantly look into product improvement and innovation. Ghee Hiang products must not only taste good, but also provide a healthy and balanced diet for our loyal customers and supportive friends. Our sesame oil plant is currently ISO 22000: 2005, HACCP and HALAL certified.

Cute, chubby and adorable, the three Ghee Hiang babies represent each individual Ghee Hiang product. Da Dou Sha, Xiao Dou Sha and Xiang Zi were born in the 21st century with names that reflect the product they each represent. A cheerful welcome at Ghee Hiang retail boutiques, these babies not only attract customers, they also never fail to put a smile on every customer’s face.
